Learning intention WALT

We are learning about engineering roles & disciplines, specifically to:

understand

  • the roles of mechanical, electrical, electronic, civil, structural, chemical and environmental engineers

be able to

  • tell the difference between an electrical and an electronic engineer

Success criteria WILF

  • I can describe the roles of mechanical, electrical, electronic, civil, structural, chemical and environmental engineers
  • I can tell the difference between an electrical and an electronic engineer

Branches of engineering

EngineerWorks on
CivilRoads, bridges, dams, tunnels, railways, buildings' foundations: large infrastructure
StructuralThe strength and stability of structures: calculating forces, choosing materials and sections
MechanicalMachines and moving parts: engines, drive systems, gears, pneumatics, vehicles
ElectricalGeneration and distribution of power: grids, motors, wiring, charging infrastructure
ElectronicCircuits, sensors, microcontrollers and control systems
ChemicalProcesses that change materials: fuels, plastics, batteries, water treatment
EnvironmentalReducing impact on the environment: surveying wildlife, pollution, waste, renewable energy, planning regulations

Don't mix up electrical (power) and electronic (control circuits): the 2025 N5 report flagged this.

Describing an engineer's activity

Questions ask for an activity an engineer would carry out in a project. Give an action plus the specific aspect: "calculate the forces on the mast" (structural), "design the control circuit and select the sensors" (electronic), "test the drive system" (mechanical), "survey wildlife at the slipway site" (environmental). "Design the controller" alone is too vague.

Big projects need an integrated approach: engineers from different branches work together, each bringing specialist knowledge.

Key terms

Civil engineerLarge infrastructure: roads, bridges, dams, railways.
Structural engineerStrength and stability of structures: forces and materials.
Mechanical engineerMachines, moving parts, drive systems and pneumatics.
Electrical engineerPower generation, distribution, motors and wiring.
