Learning intention WALT
We are learning about engineering roles & disciplines, specifically to:
understand
- the roles of mechanical, electrical, electronic, civil, structural, chemical and environmental engineers
- how engineers use specialised knowledge and work together in a project
be able to
- tell the difference between an electrical and an electronic engineer
Success criteria WILF
- I can describe the roles of mechanical, electrical, electronic, civil, structural, chemical and environmental engineers
- I can tell the difference between an electrical and an electronic engineer
- I can explain how engineers use specialised knowledge and work together in a project
Branches of engineering
| Engineer | Works on |
|---|---|
| Civil | Roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, railways, buildings' foundations: large infrastructure |
| Structural | The strength and stability of structures: calculating forces, choosing materials and sections |
| Mechanical | Machines and moving parts: engines, drive systems, gears, pneumatics, vehicles |
| Electrical | Generation and distribution of power: grids, motors, wiring, charging infrastructure |
| Electronic | Circuits, sensors, microcontrollers and control systems |
| Chemical | Processes that change materials: fuels, plastics, batteries, water treatment |
| Environmental | Reducing impact on the environment: surveying wildlife, pollution, waste, renewable energy, planning regulations |
Don't mix up electrical (power) and electronic (control circuits): the 2025 N5 report flagged this.
Describing an engineer's activity
Questions ask for an activity an engineer would carry out in a project. Give an action plus the specific aspect: "calculate the forces on the mast" (structural), "design the control circuit and select the sensors" (electronic), "test the drive system" (mechanical), "survey wildlife at the slipway site" (environmental). "Design the controller" alone is too vague.
Big projects need an integrated approach: engineers from different branches work together, each bringing specialist knowledge.
The professional engineer in a project HIGHER
- Engineers design, implement, test and control complex systems and manage budgets and timescales.
- Communication and teamwork: sharing designs and calculations, reporting to clients, coordinating with other disciplines.
- Skills and specialist knowledge: e.g. a structural engineer uses knowledge of forces, materials and factors of safety; an environmental engineer understands impact assessment and regulations. The 2025 Higher report noted candidates struggled to name these specific skills.
