What you're learning in this topic
Learning intention WALT
We are learning about sketchbooks & visual thinking, specifically to be able to:
- keep a clear, dated sketchbook that shows our process
- annotate work explaining why, with evidence
Success criteria WILF
- I can keep a clear, dated sketchbook that shows my process
- I can annotate work explaining why, with evidence
Your sketchbook is your evidence
Your sketchbook (and digital pages) is where assessors see your thinking. It doesn't need to be beautiful; it needs to be full of thinking.
- Date your pages and keep them in order so the process is clear.
- Mix sketches, photos, cuttings, samples, notes and printouts.
- Use headings that match the five elements so the assessor can find each one.
Annotation
Annotation is the notes beside your work. Good annotation explains why, not just what:
- Weak: "This is my idea."
- Strong: "I rounded the edges after two Primary 3 pupils said the corners looked sharp. This makes it feel friendlier and safer."
Use arrows to link notes to the exact part you're talking about.
Visual communication basics
- Thumbnail sketches: small, fast sketches to explore lots of options.
- Colour, contrast and composition make your pages and final ideas readable.
- Typography: choose fonts that suit the message and are readable.
- Photography and film can record tests and present ideas in context.
